Lindstrom, Carole. We Are Water Protectors. Ill. by Michaela Goade. Roaring Brook Press, 2020.
ISBN 9781250203557
Lindstrom’s writing is clear and simple and her convincing message is spoken boldly. The illustrations are done in a flowing watercolor style which adds to the idea of the “river’s rhythm” that “remembers our ancestors” running through the book.
The book ends with an explanation of the author’s background, and a glossary of Native American words and phrases. The final page is a pledge to be an earth steward and water protector, to be signed by the reader.
This book has a clear message about nature conservancy that may challenge the ideals of some readers. It is a well-spoken articulation representing a young indigenous girl’s perspective of the oil pipeline controversy.
